Vanguard Information Technology Index Fund ETF Shares
Latest Analysis Report
Vanguard Information Technology ETF (VGT) stood at $123.59 before Thursday's open, up 1.1% over five days while the S&P 500 slipped 0.1%, and a split Big Tech earnings night now tests it. Microsoft's Azure beat lifted its shares, while Alphabet's heavy AI spending sank its stock and Nasdaq futures. The balance of evidence still leans positive, with medium conviction, because the fund sits above its weekly and 50-day trends.
Why it matters
The event is two earnings reports pointing in opposite directions. Microsoft, one of the fund's largest holdings, reported revenue up 19% to $92.28 billion and Azure growth above 48%, ahead of forecasts, according to SiliconANGLE. Its shares rose about 5% after hours. Alphabet missed on both revenue and earnings, and the Financial Times reported $51.4 billion of AI infrastructure capex and negative free cash flow of $9 billion. Its shares fell more than 10% at one point. Alphabet sits outside the fund's sector, so its hit reaches VGT through one question: whether the AI spending is earning its return.
The market has not yet fully priced that question into VGT. The $123.59 level predates the reaction, and Reuters said Nasdaq 100 futures were down 1.22% early Thursday. A drop of that size in the index would push the fund toward its 50-day average at $122.44. Supporting news came from the supply chain: Bloomberg reported Air Liquide's electronics revenue, which serves chipmakers, up 12%, and Samsung posted record earnings, though short of elevated expectations. Demand for the AI build-out looks intact. What is in doubt is how the market values the spending behind it.
Of the fund's 1.1% five-day gain, the market explains little: the S&P 500 fell 0.1%, so VGT outran it by about 1.2 points. No sector fund comparison is available, and no news item explains why the basket rose this week. The one-month picture is weaker: VGT is down 1.2% while the S&P 500 is up 0.9%. It remains 4.8% below its October 6, 2026 peak of $129.80. Year to date it is up 31.2% against 13.3% for the S&P 500.
The debate is about the return on AI spending, not demand. The positive side is that cloud growth is accelerating. CNBC's Investing Club took a positive stance on Microsoft after the quarter and set a $580 price target. The cautious side is that Alphabet's cloud revenue doubled and the stock still fell, because cash burn rose faster. If the market punishes the spender even when the demand is there, the whole AI theme becomes harder to hold at a premium. No analyst targets exist for the fund itself, and the $580 figure applies only to Microsoft, so it cannot be set against VGT's price.
What the evidence says
The long-term thesis is intact. VGT trades above its 40-week average and well above its 200-day average at $109.14, and it has gained 20.4% in six months. It is in a pullback within an uptrend: the fund has slipped from a high but has not broken any major support. Its 52-week range runs from $83.59 to $129.80, and it sits 47.9% above the low.
For the next 2 to 6 weeks the balance of evidence leans positive, with medium conviction, 2 points of 4. Two things support it: the daily trend runs with the weekly uptrend, and the fund leads the S&P 500 over 50 days by 0.3%. Both fall short of overwhelming. The lead is thin, and two of the four conviction points are missing.
The strongest case against is the short-term tape. The 14-day RSI is 41.8, which is soft, and the fund lost ground against the market over the past month. Volume on the latest session ran 23.4% below its 20-day average, so the bounce lacks buying interest. Add a Nasdaq futures drop of more than 1% on the AI-spending question and the downside risk is real. It does not tip the balance because the weekly trend and the 50-day average are still intact, but it is why conviction is not higher.
Levels that matter
The structure holds above $122.44, the 50-day average, and that is the first place a failure would show. The trend ends below $115.77, a swing zone, and a weekly close beneath it would mean the pullback has become something larger. Below that, $110.52 and the 200-day average at $109.14 are the next supports, with $100 as the round-number floor.
The breakout level is a daily close above $125.00 on volume above its 20-day average. From there the first target is $126.31, a swing zone, which gives only 0.4 to 1 against a stop at $121.81 (the 50-day average less a quarter of the 2.50 ATR). The second target is the 52-week high at $129.80, which gives 1.5 to 1. The math does not reach the 3 to 1 that makes a breakout worth the risk. It would need targets beyond the 52-week high, and the next marked level there is the round $150, so that case cannot arise until the fund makes a new high.
What would change the picture
A weekly close below $115.77 would change the picture, because it would break the swing zone that defines the uptrend's structure. The non-price fact that would do it is evidence that AI infrastructure demand is cooling, for example a major cloud customer or chip-supply chain company cutting spending plans. Alphabet's capex shows the market is already questioning the return on the spending. A cut in the spending itself would hit the demand that VGT's chip and software holdings depend on.
What to watch
- The October 29, 2026 open: whether VGT holds the 50-day average at $122.44 after the futures drop.
- A daily close above $125.00 on volume above the 20-day average, the first sign that buyers are back.
- Follow-through on Microsoft's gains, and whether Alphabet's selloff spreads to other AI spenders.
- The Federal Reserve: the Financial Times says it is playing for time, and a shift in rate expectations would matter for a basket this far above its averages.
- The fund's 50-day lead over the S&P 500, now 0.3%. If it turns negative, one of the two supports for the positive reading falls away.
